Mother’s Day Newsletter: Celebrating the Essence of a Good Woman

Dear Friends and Readers,

As Mother’s Day approaches, I find myself reflecting on the profound impact that mothers and maternal figures have on our lives. In my book Catharsis, I dedicate a heartfelt piece titled “Essence of a Good Woman” to honor not only the women who have biologically given birth but also those remarkable souls who, without planning or intention, have embraced the role of motherhood with grace, commitment, and unwavering love.

A Mother’s Role: Born of Love, Not Just Birth

Many in the world are remiss when they overlook the women who have bore not but championed the aristocracy of motherhood—those who take on the role of mother with dedication and purpose. As I wrote in Catharsis:

“Being on call, being relentlessly at will, being a diligent ambassador of maternal wit and affection with pride and without prejudice. A phenomenon I call with an inexplicable connection.”

It is not the act of giving birth alone that makes a woman a mother. It is the willingness to nurture, to stand steadfast in the face of adversity, to love unconditionally, and to provide support—no matter how unexpected the call to motherhood might be.

The Unconscious Mind of a Mother

In reflecting on this dynamic role, I draw inspiration from the insights of Dr. Sigmund Freud, who believed that the unconscious mind governs behavior to a greater extent than we realize. A mother—biological or surrogate—develops an unconscious awareness that stores the feelings, thoughts, and even the urges to protect and guide her children, regardless of the challenges that arise.

It takes inner strength and selfless dedication to balance the pleasant and unpleasant aspects of life, all while maintaining an unwavering love. This is the beauty and the burden of the maternal spirit—a constant, intuitive connection that never fades.

An Unbreakable Legacy: The Memory of Granny

When I think about the qualities of a good woman—a cradle rocker and a world delight—I am reminded of the gem-like qualities that only a mother could possess: nurture, love, selflessness, integrity, and wisdom. To me, the embodiment of these traits was my grandmother, Nellie Vaughn Campbell-Hilliard.

Granny was more than just my family; she filled the circumference of my heart with love and was the evidence of my joy. And as one could only imagine, my grandmother was my heart’s compass, guiding me with love and a fierce commitment to my well-being. She was a mother not just to me but to everyone who needed one—a woman who said to the world,

“Come in, you’re welcome.”

Embracing the Call to Motherhood

This Mother’s Day, I encourage you to honor every woman who embodies the spirit of a mother—whether she has given birth or has embraced the role with open arms and a willing heart. Never forget the magnitude of your inner strength and your capacity to love, for it is that gift that heals hearts and shapes lives.

To the strong, powerful, and intelligent women out there: take a moment to appreciate your incredible capacity to love and support. You are the essence of a good woman.

With deepest gratitude and love,

Dr. Rachelle Stevens Author of Catharsis
